Japanese Translators of New York City

On March 21, 2019, I was sitting in a cafe, wondering what to do after hearing that I didn’t get the full-time job of my dreams. I was unemployed for the first time in my adult life and knew the next step was to contact the companies my friends kindly referred me to for work. But, before that, I realized that I had something I’d never had and probably wouldn’t have as much of again… which was time. I knew that any untraditional ambition, which I’d normally make up an excuse to avoid if working a 9-5, could be fulfilled now that I had some free time. That was when I decided to create this group. When I was in high school, trying to learn Japanese by myself, I always looked for Japanese-English translator events and meetups but I never found anything promising. I knew this would be the only chance I had to create this for a while, so I contacted my friend Jackson, who barely knew me as a translator colleague at the time, and asked if he wouldn’t mind co-hosting with me. And then JTNYC was born.
